“Mental health is important as physical health because it is about our inner being. Having self-love is important, and as a woman, I can inspire people to take care of themselves, to take care of their minds as well as their health because they will be as effective…”
That was then-candidate Vickie Rushton’s answer to the question she received during the Binibining Pilipinas 2019 held in the Smart Araneta Coliseum last June 9, 2019 (Sunday). The question asked to her by actor Daniel Padilla was “Why is mental health as important as physical health?”
The answer received wide mixed reactions from the many Filipinos watching the pageant live last Sunday especially given that Ms. Rushton was a favorite amongst many. Some expressed their disappointment towards her given that she was doing very well in the pageant up until then while some continued to express their support for her by being sympathetic to the fact that she may have had a case of the jitters during the Q&A. Even Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach went on to recently defend the younger beauty pageant candidate by saying during one of her Instagram stories how it is not easy to compete in pageants such as those but that “I hope she can try again. I believe this girl is smart. Nerves can happen to even the best of us.”
Ms. Rushton has also recently stated in an interview how she, herself, regrets what happened during that Sunday night since she knew what she wanted to say for her given question. Although, unlike what most fans and celebrities alike have been assuming was mere nervousness for her loss of composure, she told an interviewer that she unfortunately got distracted by someone in the audience who had made a face at her as she was speaking.
She was able to receive most of the special awards presented during that night although, despite being rooted by many, was not able to claim the title and crown that would have made her a viable candidate and the Philippine representative for this year’s Miss Universe.
Vickie Rushton, born Vickie Marie Milagrosa Sausa Rushton in Negros Occidental on May 8th, 1992, is a British-Filipina model and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned with the Mutya ng Pilipinas 2011 and the Binibining Pilipinas 1st Runner Up back in 2018. She was also a housemate in ABS-CBN’s reality television series Pinoy Big Brother where she ended up getting fourth place by the end of the season’s run.
Well, if there is at least one thing we can all take from this is that nobody is perfect and even the most confident-looking people can get nervous or distracted too. They’re only human and maybe the sooner we remind ourselves of this, regardless of our initial expectations from her, then the sooner we can go back to just simply rooting for her to try again the next time around.
