The government’s task force on the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) hailed Thursday the efforts by the local government of Manila City in containing the spread of the disease as it handed over medical equipment to help in its fight against the pandemic.

“Malaki ang magagawa ng Manila (Manila can do so much),” National Task Force (NTF) on Covid-19 chief implementer, Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr., said in a press conference. “Ang Manila ay modelo na nakikita natin kung gaano kaimportante ang leadership ng mga mayor. Magkakaroon ng vision at direction (We see Manila as a model on how important the leadership of the mayor is in having vision and direction)”.

Members of the task force paid a courtesy visit to Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso at the Manila city hall to show the support of the national government to the different local government units (LGUs) in their effort to contain Covid-19.

“Nais naming batiin ang ating Mayor ng Maynila dahil sa lahat ng ginagawa nya para sa mga citizens ng city of Manila (We want to commend the Mayor of Manila for the efforts he is doing for the citizens of the city),” NTF on Covid-19 deputy chief implementer Vince Dizon said.

He said the cooperation and support of local chief executives are very important in the fight of the government to ensure that Covid-19 is controlled and managed.

“Napakalaki ng binibigay na authority sa ating mga local chief executives, dahil sila ang nakakaalam kung ano ang dapat gawin at para magawa ito ng mabilis, kasi ang key ay yung speed. Tuloy-tuloy lang ang ating pagtutulungan (The authority given to local chief executives is vital because they are the ones who know what has to be done and how to do it fast. Speed is the key),” Dizon said.

Galvez, meanwhile, also cited the importance of massive testing.

“Kampante kami na kayang kaya namin ito (We are confident that we can do this), (thanks to) massive testing and early detection and prevention,” he said.

The task force also turned over around 10,000 pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE) to the city while Senator Manny Pacquiao, through his representative, turned over about 5,000 test kits.

“Katulad ng sinasabi ni mayor, kailangan early detection, kailangan mahuli agad natin ang mga maysakit bago pa sila makapanghawa ng iba. Ang testing critical dyan (Like what mayor always says, early detection is needed. We need to immediately isolate those who are positive with the virus before they infect other people, so testing is critical),” he said.

Domagoso thanked the task force for the leadership and guidance of the national government in the fight against Covid-19.

He added that he and all the other local chief executives are in the same direction in fighting the pandemic.

“While we always argue, debate and share ideas (during Zoom meetings), at the end of the day, we act as one,” Domagoso said.

Under the leadership of Domagoso, Manila was able to put up 12 quarantine facilities and a Covid-19 testing laboratory.

Targeted testing is also being done through rapid test kits and the swab test.

These initiatives are part of Domagoso’s “CODE Covid-19” or the “contain and delay” action plan to test, trace, isolate, and treat Covid-19 patients in the city.

Data from the Department of Health (DOH) showed the number of Covid-19 cases in the nation’s capital went down by 17 percent as of July 5.

Meanwhile, Dizon said as the country slowly opens up, everyone must remember that Covid-19 is still around.

“Nandito na tayo sa yugto ng ating laban sa Covid-19 na nangangailangan ng ating pag-transition para dahan-dahan na nating bubuksan ang ating ekonomiya. Pero kailangan maramdaman natin sabi nga ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte, yung Covid-19 nanjan pa rin, pero kinakailangan nang magtrabaho, magnegosyo pero kailangang mag ingat pa rin (We are in the stage that we need to slowly open the economy, but we need to remember that, as President Rodrigo Duterte said, Covid-19 is still around so extreme precautions must always be observed),” he said.
