Recognizing the importance of education in Filipino families, leading online money transfer service WorldRemit celebrates its one-year anniversary in the Philippines with an early Christmas celebration with the students of Cabadiangan Integrated School in Cebu Province.

According to WorldRemit, education is one of the key drivers of increased digital remittances across the globe.

In fact, new research from the money transfer service revealed that the $689 billion in remittances that migrants send back home every year helps more than 3.5 million children around the world to go to school. In the Philippines, WorldRemit data shows spikes in digital remittances during back-to-school and graduation seasons, reflecting how the education of family is also a top priority Overseas Filipino Workers.

“We, at WorldRemit, recognize the importance of education to our customers and their families. Our business allows us to play a great role in ensuring that families get the financial support that their loved ones need in the fastest and most efficient way possible,” Tsai Lim, head of customer support at WorldRemit Philippines said.

Over 560 students and 25 educators gathered to welcome WorldRemit in Compostela, Cebu as the company brought Christmas cheers and treats to the institution for the upcoming holiday season. WorldRemit employees, along with team members from the London headquarters, help distribute school supplies and food to the students of Cabadiangan. As a way to show their gratitude, the school prepared a short program to entertain their guests and expressed their appreciation through heartfelt messages to the company.

Earlier this year, WorldRemit in the Philippines named Cabadiangan Integrated School as its first beneficiary to mark its one-year milestone in the country.

In partnership with World Vision, WorldRemit saw the need of the school for additional educational resources, prompting them to bring in photocopying machines and paper supplies to Cabadiangan in order to reproduce books and learning materials to all students. According to the principal of the institution, they were only able to provide one textbook per year level, making it a challenge for educators to provide extensive class discussion and reference materials for all students.

“This CSR activity is just one of the many steps we have in the pipeline as we strengthen our presence in the Philippines and reflect our commitment to connect people and places to improve the quality of life around the world. We hope to be able to support more Filipino youth and hopefully, contribute to the betterment of their education in preparation for them to become productive members of society,” Lim added.

By 2020, WorldRemit aims to be able to donate computers to the school, rebuild its library and help refurbish some of its classrooms. Apart from this, the company also plans to launch sustainable programs for its CSR initiatives by conducting computer efficiency programs and English courses for Cabadiangan educators.

As the company continues to grow in the country, WorldRemit has also launched various employee engagement initiatives including WR Cliques, a program that allows employees to build internal groups that support their interests and hobbies such as Photography, Health & Wellness and Glee Club to name a few. The program aims to promote individual wellness as well as community involvement outside the company.
