At least 278 young people showed up and registered at the Commission on elections (Comelec) office here in time for the reopening of voters’ registration Tuesday.

In a statement Wednesday, the city public information office said the registration of the young voters was intended for the upcoming Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections in December this year.

“The information drive has gained positive results as many young voters registered during the first day of the reopening of the voters’ registration,” the information office said.

It added that most of the early registrants include 15-year-olds and those born on or before December 5, 2006.

“Aside from the young voters, other residents also visited the Comelec for change of status, transfer of address, and reactivation,” the information office said.

“I decided to register early to avoid the rush and congestion of registrants expected in the coming days,” Jerin Jumapit, 16, one of the young voters who appeared at the Comelec Tuesday.

Jumpait hopes the SK elections in December will push through as she exercises her right to suffrage for the first time.

Meanwhile, Butuan Election Officer Samuel Rollo called on residents to come out and register.

“Don’t wait for the last day to come. Visit our office this early and register,” Rollo said.

Voters registration is conducted Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (PNA)
