Mapping the history and sharing it with the world, Takushi Ohno strengthened the study of the Philippines in Japan after publishing his book “The Truth Behind the Circumnavigation of the Magellan Fleet after 500 Years.”

Ohno is a retired journalist, translator, and President of the University of the Philippines Alumni Association in Japan. For a long time, he was interested in the history of the Philippines, from pre-colonial times to significant events that contributed to the issues of the country today.

His book, written in Japanese and English and which can be read via subscription in the Daily Manila Shimbun, showcases Magellan’s exploration route together with the relations of the Philippines at the time to its neighboring Asian countries.

He shared on his Facebook account the focus he wanted for his book, which is the 16th part of the 500th year of Magellan’s Arrival series.

“It was a difficult labor, but finally the book has climbed up and made it to the bookstore. Taking the Magellan stage, I thought about the formation of the country called “Philippines” and the society, people, and culture of the country since the Great Sail era,” Ohno wrote in his caption.

The narrative style caters to those who, much like him, are interested in Philippine history by learning and understanding beyond the academic walls.

“My book is not for students but for general readers who know little about the Philippines. I wrote this book in order to introduce the history, people, society, and culture of the Philippine Islands on the occasion of Magellan’s 500th anniversary,” Ohno wrote to a local news outlet.

Ohno himself has been an excellent navigator, sailing through the country’s golden history and selflessly sharing his knowledge with his homeland.
