The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Tuesday reported the completion of an evacuation center building in Pasig City, which would help boost the disaster response operations in Metro Manila.

In a statement, DPWH National Capital Region (NCR) director Loreta Malaluan said the two-story evacuation center building was turned over to officials of Barangay Bambang.

“Scope of works on our evacuation facility project covers not just the civil and finishing works, but also plumbing and electro-mechanical components so that it is all set for occupancy,” she said.

Malaluan said the building constructed by the DPWH Metro Manila 1st District Engineering Office would provide a conducive temporary shelter for disaster-displaced families in the area.

“The project will enable individuals and families to seek emergency refuge, receive essential services, and regain stability during disasters,” she added.

Malaluan also reported that the Pasig evacuation center is the fourth of the seven evacuation center projects to be completed.

Other completed evacuation centers are located at the Boystown Complex in Parang, Marikina worth PHP20.73 million; Barangay Guadalupe Viejo in Makati City, worth PHP19.31 million; and Barangay Commonwealth in Quezon City worth PHP66.20 million.

These projects were funded under the 2023 General Appropriations Act.

Three other evacuation center projects, all in Taguig City, are under construction — in Barangay Calzada (PHP9.5 million); Barangay Ibayo-Tipas (PHP4.9 million) and Barangay Bagumbayan (PHP12.73 million). (PNA)
