Over 1,100 residents of various towns in Albay province now have access to affordable and nutritious food items through the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) Walang Gutom Program.

In a media release on Friday, DSWD-5 Regional Director Norman Laurio said the beneficiaries who participated in the first food redemption early this week were from Camalig, Guinobatan, Jovellar, and Ligao City.

Laurio said the Walang Gutom Program focuses on providing wholesome meals that enhance the overall well-being of individuals and families, rather than merely giving food.

A total of 1,127 beneficiaries were served in Camalig (238); Ligao City (298); and Guinobatan and Jovellar (591).

Each household was given Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards with PHP3,000 worth of food items, that will help alleviate hunger and promote better well-being.

“The program prioritizes not only the provision of food but also the distribution of nutritious, high-quality items that contribute to better health and wellness,” Laurio said.

DSWD-Bicol continues its efforts to assist individuals struggling to meet their basic necessities.

This program aligns with DSWD’s primary goal of ensuring that no one is left behind, especially those who are marginalized or experiencing crises.

Laurio added that through initiatives like Walang Gutom, the department not only provides short-term assistance but also promotes long-term solutions to poverty and hunger.

“With sustained effort and collaboration, we can create a society where no one goes hungry,” he said. (PNA)
