The National Irrigation Administration in Region 4A (NIA-Calabarzon) participated in the nationwide launch of the “Bagong Bayaning Magsasaka” (BBM) Rice Program and the “Kadiwa ng Pangulo” at its regional office in Pila, Laguna on Friday.

The event sold 1,000 sacks of BBM rice, each weighing 10 kilos, at PHP29 per kilo.

Senior citizens, persons with disabilities, solo parents, and Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program beneficiaries, were given first access on a first-come, first-served basis.

Roberto dela Cruz, regional director of NIA-4A, explained that the BBM rice was the outcome of a pilot rice contract farming initiative between the agency and irrigators’ associations (IAs) in the region.

This year, the initiative covered 271 hectares of farmland, benefiting 216 farmers.

As of early September, 165 hectares have been harvested, with the remaining 106 hectares scheduled by the end of the month.

Looking ahead, NIA targets 1,500 hectares for 2025 under the rice contract farming agreement, where IAs will receive PHP50,000 per hectare cash assistance for an anticipated yield of five metric tons per hectare.

“Under the program, NIA guarantees the purchase of farmers’ harvested rice (palay), ensuring a steady market for their produce,” Dela Cruz said.

Meanwhile, the Kadiwa ng Pangulo sa NIA program offers a range of farm produce from IAs, including fruits, vegetables, and other goods.

This initiative was designed to connect farmers directly with consumers, eliminating intermediaries, thereby lowering the prices.

“The Kadiwa program operates every Friday at our regional office and the Irrigation Management Offices,” Dela Cruz said. “These initiatives align with the government’s efforts to strengthen the agriculture sector, improve the livelihoods of Filipino farmers and ensure food security for the nation.”

Also on Friday at the provincial capitol extension in Barangay Halang, Calamba City, over 1,000 residents received government support through the “Handog ng Pangulo: Serbisyong Sapat para sa Lahat” (President’s Gift: Sufficient Service for All).

The Department of Labor and Employment distributed cash assistance to some 1,000 individuals through the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers emergency employment program.

Additionally, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority provided training support funds to 100 scholars, while the Department of Trade and Industry extended funds to three local operators.

The Department of Agriculture showcased the “Kadiwa ng Pangulo” program with fresh and high-quality produce at affordable prices. (PNA)
