The government is rolling out new “climate-smart” strategies to help the Philippines adapt to the worsening impacts of climate change, Malacañang said Tuesday.

Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro said President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has ordered the development of science-driven and technology-based programs to strengthen the country’s disaster resilience and food security.

Among the government’s ongoing efforts, she cited the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) Automated Furrow Irrigation System (AFIS), which conserves water and improves crop yields through precise irrigation, and the Smart Farming Initiative that uses soil and moisture sensors to boost agricultural productivity.

Castro added that the government is also developing a National Adaptation Plan (NAP) for a “climate-smart and climate-resilient Philippines,” alongside the state weather bureau’s continued investment in early warning systems and disaster preparedness technologies.

She said the President has long emphasized the need for global collaboration in tackling the climate crisis.

“As the President often says, climate change is not a challenge one country can solve alone — it requires a united global response,” Castro said. (PNA)
