From Vietnamese Cultural Memory To A Contemporary Fashion Language

At Milan Fashion Week, Vietnamese fashion house Phan Dang Hoang officially presented its Spring/Summer 2027 collection, “Tấm Cám” continuing its journey of bringing Vietnamese stories, craftsmanship, and cultural identity to the international fashion stage.

Inspired by “Tấm Cám” one of Vietnam’s most enduring fairy tales and a story deeply embedded in the cultural memory of generations, the collection explores Tấm’s journey of transformation — from a gentle young woman subjected to injustice to a figure who repeatedly transforms in her search for identity, agency, and her own happiness.

These transformations speak to the enduring resilience of the human spirit, the latent strength found in the face of loss and adversity, and the ability to adapt and reinvent oneself in response to the changing course of fate.

To transform without losing one’s identity, to evolve in order to become oneself — this is the spirit that runs throughout Phan Dang Hoang Spring/Summer 2027.

A New “Tấm”

From the original folk tale, Vietnamese cultural references are further expanded through the image of the traditional Northern woman. The “áo yếm” — a traditional Vietnamese bodice —, the “khăn mỏ quạ” headscarf, fluid lines, and the distinctive grace associated with this culturally rich region are distilled, deconstructed, and reconstructed through contemporary silhouettes.

Images rooted in collective memory are removed from their original context and reconsidered through Phan Dang Hoang’s distinctive design language, where structure, material, and craftsmanship come together to give familiar cultural values a new form.

40 looks unfold as a deliberate journey of transformation, in which structures and silhouettes are continuously redefined. Bold, sharply defined cut-outs give way to softer, fluid forms, creating a dynamic dialogue between strength and femininity.

Through these successive transformations, Tấm emerges in a new form — proud, striking, and assured, while retaining the delicate elegance that has remained deeply embedded in the cultural memory of generations.

The modern Vietnamese woman, a new-generation “Tấm” steps onto the global stage, engaging with contemporary fashion and the movements of the wider world while carrying with her the refinement and cultural identity that shaped her origins.

The Spirit Of Transformation

The encounter between seemingly opposing elements has long been an integral part of Phan Dang Hoang’s fashion language, expressing a spirit of transformation through material.
Once again, brocade meets denim; softness meets structure; and traditional handcraft techniques are reinterpreted through a contemporary design vocabulary.

For this collection, the young designer turns to hand embroidery using silk threads, created by artisans from traditional craft villages in northern Vietnam. The embroidery serves not merely as ornamentation, but as a layer of memory across the surface of the garments — where time, patience, and the value of the human hand are placed in dialogue with the accelerating pace of contemporary fashion.

Brocade Of Memory

A significant chapter of Spring/Summer 2027 – Tấm Cám is the collaboration between Phan Dang Hoang and Hangsilk to develop a special line of brocade exclusively for the Vietnamese market.

Carrying the heritage of a textile deeply connected to Vietnamese culture and traditional dress, the new brocade is developed through a dialogue between inherited craftsmanship and a younger design perspective.

The collaboration between Phan Dang Hoang and Hangsilk therefore creates a conversation between heritage and the present, between what has been passed down and the way a new generation chooses to carry the story forward.

The Tấm Cám collection does not seek to recreate the traditional image of the Northern woman. Instead, Phan Dang Hoang looks for the spirit that remains beneath these familiar forms — exploring how a culture is remembered, transformed, and allowed to continue living in the present.
