The Department of Science and Technology in Caraga (DOST-13) formally opened Thursday the three-day Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW), showcasing achievements and innovations that drive development across the region.
The event highlights the role of science and technology in fostering collaboration and advancing research, while giving residents opportunities to learn about innovations already developed and ready for application.
In a press conference, DOST-13 Regional Director Noel Ajoc said science and technology breakthroughs have benefited various sectors, particularly farmers and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
“A number of MSMEs in the provinces are already utilizing these innovations, especially in food processing,” Ajoc said, noting that most food technologies were developed by state colleges and universities in the region.
“These innovations and developed technologies are now on display during this three-day RSTW in Butuan City,” he added.
DOST Undersecretary Maria Theresa De Guzman also joined the opening, presenting Project SARAI, or Smarter Approaches to Reinvigorate Agriculture as an Industry.
“Our farmers and fisherfolk are facing challenges in climate change. In Project SARAI, we put together a program where technologies can be made available online,” De Guzman said.
She explained that the online platform provides data on climate, weather, and agricultural inputs, including costs and sources of materials.
“Project SARAI also guides farmers on where crops are best planted, when to plant, and how to identify pests that damage farms,” she said, adding that all data are accessible to help farmers make timely decisions.
Ajoc noted that model areas for Project SARAI have already been established in municipalities across the region’s five provinces, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture.
He also acknowledged the participation of local government units in the opening of RSTW, underscoring their role in supporting science and technology initiatives.
The RSTW is an annual event that brings together researchers, innovators, and stakeholders to showcase S&T breakthroughs and promote technology commercialization across the country. (PNA)
