The Department of Tourism in Northern Mindanao (DOT-10) has completed 170 tourism road projects worth PHP6.16 billion over the past eight years, significantly boosting the region’s tourism infrastructure.

During Tuesday’s Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas forum here, DOT-10 Director Marie Elaine Unchuan said the projects, implemented from 2016 to 2024, paved 210.05 kilometers of roads under the Tourism Road Infrastructure Program.

Unchuan credited the success to collaboration with the Department of Public Works and Highways and local government units across the region’s five provinces.

The completed projects have contributed to job creation and arrivals of 2,602,956 foreign and local visitors in 2024.

The United States and Spain were the top international markets.

“These roads not only enhance accessibility to tourist destinations but also stimulate economic growth in the region,” Unchuan said.

Mindanao’s first Tourist Rest Area is also in Northern Mindanao, inaugurated in Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon on Aug. 4, 2024.

“This innovative project provides a much-needed pit stop for travelers, offering comfort and convenience while exploring the region. It is just the beginning of more infrastructure projects that will enhance the travel experience in the region,” a DOT statement said.

“As Northern Mindanao continues to rise as a key tourism hub, DOT remains steadfast in its mission to enhance visitor experiences, foster sustainable tourism growth and showcase the limitless adventures of the region to the world.” (PNA)
