First date woes! As if dating wasn’t hard enough, meeting or spending time with someone for the first time is oftentimes a course of anxiety for a lot of us. There’s a lot to take into consideration when going out on the very first date with your potential partner: where to go, what to eat, what to wear, what to do, what not to do, how to act, and the latest debacle on the long list of first date etiquettes—who should pay the bill?

While the question has been a source of debate ever since dating was invented, it sparked buzz again in the online space when a Tik Tok user, Robin Setias, a popular content creator on the app known for his relationship and dating videos, posed the question, “Should the man or woman pay the bill?”

In the now-deleted video, which is part of the user’s Tiktok series called “Usapang Lalaki”, three guys shared their opinion on who should shoulder the bill on the first date. The TikTok user voiced out that it should be a 50/50 system wherein both parties split the bill.

He expounded, “Pareho naman tayong magbebenefit [sa date], so bakit ako lang ang gagastos?”

The video ended with the three concluding that the KKB (Kanya-kanyang bayad) system, wherein each person pays their own bill, is the way to go, citing gender equality as the reason.

Other TikTok users, however, did not agree with the trio’s opinion, arguing that it’s a man’s initiative to shoulder the bill on the first date.

Content creator Meiko Montefalco, voiced her personal take on the topic, saying that a gentleman would not let a lady pay. She added, “a gentleman loves to provide for his lady. It boosts their ego, it makes them feel more manly, and providing for their woman actually makes their heart happy.”

Vlogger Akosi Dogie also shared his perspective on his Tiktok. He said if the man is still courting the girl, then the man should pay. But if they’re already in a relationship, then it should be a KKB system.

The debate soon expanded to different social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, with netizens having mixed opinions. Some even discussed the gender, feminism, and class aspects of the topic.

Local makeup brand CEO Nina Cabrera shared on her Twitter account her argument for those who use feminism as the reason for splitting the bill. She said, “If you’re a guy and you support the notion of doing KKB or splitting the bill on a date, you should also support equal rights, equal pay, and treat women equally. Feminism shouldn’t occur only when it’s convenient for you.”

Another Twitter user seemed to provide a solution for the fiasco, saying the one who asked for the date should be the one to pay.

He expounded, “If I asked you out on a date, I’ll pay for it. Nakakahiya naman if I asked you to spend your valuable time with me tapos pinagastos pa kita.”

While it seems like there’s no correct way to go on about the topic, and who should pay on dates always depends on the situation, there’s one thing to be sure of date how you want to date!
