ABS-CBN News broadcast journalist and anchor Christian Esguerra has been given one of the highest honors for journalists and communicators as he was named the 2020 Marshall McLuhan fellow by the Canadian Embassy in the Philippines and the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR).

Christian was honored after the Jaime V. Ongpin (JVO) Journalism Seminar that was conducted online, where he served as a panelist together with fellow ABS-CBN journalists Mike Navallo and Chiara Zambrano. He is set to visit universities in Canada and the Philippines to lecture on topics about journalism.

Canada’s Ambassador to the Philippines, Peter MacArthur, awarded the prestigious McLuhan fellowship to Esguerra, commending him for his “consistency in providing the public outstanding coverage of the most pressing stories of the day; knowledge of a wide range of issues, deftness in adapting to the changing platforms of the industry, and a desire to mold the next generation of media professionals.”

Esguerra currently anchors “Matters of Fact” that airs daily from 7 am to 8 am on ANC, the ABS-CBN News Channel. He also has a new podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and YouTube called “Facts First,” where he discusses political issues with experts and policymakers. Previously, he was one of the hosts of “Early Edition” and “Mornings @ ANC.” He also covered important national events as a correspondent and produced explainers on relevant issues and topics for the ABS-CBN News digital project “NXT.”

Other current and past ABS-CBN journalists who became McLuhan fellows include Jeff Canoy (2018), Gigi Grande (2016), Lynda Jumilla-Abalos (2012), Gerry Lirio (2006), and Luz Rimban (2003).
