The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Monday expressed its willingness for stronger defense cooperation with Japan.

AFP chief Gen. Andres Centino made this remark following the courtesy call of Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics Agency (ATLA) commissioner Tsuchimoto Hideki at AFP general headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City on Monday.

Centino also welcomed and expressed his appreciation to the Japanese official for Japan’s assistance in the AFP modernization and capability upgrade program.

“We are thankful for your help in our modernization and acquisition of new equipment and capability,” he said.

Centino was referring to Japanese efforts to provide the Philippine Air Force (PAF) with UH-IH spare parts which were instrumental in returning to service a number of “Huey” helicopters to service, the donation of at least five TC-90 aircraft which the Navy is now using as maritime patrol planes and three radar systems which the PAF is now using to monitor the country’s airspace.

He added that the AFP is excited to work with the Japanese government to further improve security and defense relations in view of present challenges.

Tsuchimoto reciprocated the gesture and relayed Japan’s willingness to enhance ties under its new defense and security policies.

With these new strategic documents, the Japanese official said they are also looking for ways to strengthen defense equipment and technology cooperation with other countries, including the Philippines, to contribute to peace and stability in the region. (PNA)
