The Department of Health–Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) in Bicol reiterates the importance of oral health amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, as part of its celebration of Oral Health Month this February.

DOH-Bicol, in a statement on Friday, said this year’s observance carries the theme, “Paigtingin: Oral Health for Juan at Juana sa panahon ng pandemya”.

Dr. Lulu Ramos-Santiago, DOH-Bicol Oral Health Program Coordinator, said paying attention to oral health care should be done all year-round but is most crucial amid the prevailing health crisis.

Santiago also clarified that the dental care services provided by the DOH are still available, although “adjustments have been made to ensure that the minimum public health standards are observed.”

These services include tooth extractions, dental check-ups for pregnant women, traumatic restorative treatments, and fluoridation, among others.

The DOH-Bicol aims to give every individual a healthy smile when a large part of the population has been vaccinated against Covid-19 and wearing face masks is no longer required.

“Thus, the public is encouraged to keep in mind the importance of practicing good oral hygiene,” Santiago said.

Keeping in mind the BIDA Solusyon, a campaign against Covid-19, the acronym was modified under the oral health program to remind the public on the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene.

BIDA stands for: B – bawal walang toothbrush (Brushing teeth is a must); I – iwasan ang matatamis at malalagkit na pagkain (Avoid sweet and sticky foods); D – dumura lamang pagkatapos mag toothbrush, wag magmumog (spit out only after brushing, do not gargle); and A – alamin ang tamang paraan ng pangangalaga ng ngipin (learn the right ways of taking care of the teeth).
