Judy Ann Santos, a revered name in Philippine cinema, has once again proven her prowess as an actress on the international stage. The multi-awarded actress bagged the Best Actress award at the prestigious 45th Fantasporto Film in Porto, Portugal, for her compelling performance in the horror-thriller Espantaho (Scarecrow).

The Fantasporto Film Festival, widely recognized for celebrating fantasy, horror, and science fiction films, has honored numerous cinematic greats since its inception in 1981. This latest achievement cements Santos’ reputation not just as a local film icon but as a performer capable of commanding global spotlight.

A Winning Performance

In “Espantaho”, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Chito S. Roño and written by Chris Martinez, Santos delivers a haunting portrayal of a woman trapped in a chilling supernatural narrative.

Her performance, layered with depth and raw emotion, captivated audiences and critics alike, ultimately earning her the coveted award.

The film, which first gained attention as an entry in the 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival, already saw Santos clinch a Best Actress win locally. Now, with this international accolade, “Espantaho” and its lead star have further solidified their place in Philippine film history.

Santos, who personally attended the awards ceremony in Portugal, was visibly moved by the recognition. Holding the trophy, she expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent Filipino talent on an international platform.

“I would like to thank the jury of Fantasporto for the recognition. It is with great pride and honor that I represent my country which is the Philippines and share this award with my director, Chito Roño, our writer Chris Martinez, and my producer, Atty. Joji [Alonso], and of course my ‘Espantaho’ team, my husband, and three children, they have always been my inspiration,” Santos said.

A Trailblazer for Filipino Talent

Santos’ latest recognition at Fantasporto adds her name to the growing list of Filipino artists making waves in international film festivals.

Before Santos, the first Filipino actress to win at the said awarding festival was Barbie Forteza in 2016, lauded for her performance in the drama film “Laut”. Two years later in 2018, sought-after actor Ian Veneracion claimed his Fantasporto award for his supernatural horror movie “Ilawood”. Later on in 2020, Cristine Reyes became the third Filipina actress to receive the same award for her portrayal as a vengeful battered wife in the psychological thriller “UnTrue”.

Now, with Santos’ triumph at Fantasporto, it is more than just a personal achievement – it is a moment of pride for Philippine cinema, an affirmation of its artistry, and a sign that FIlipino storytelling can resonate with audiences across the globe.
