The Catholic members of the LGBTQ community rejoiced as Pope Francis endorsed same-sex civil unions.

The most well-loved pope is the first-ever pontiff to agree on such matters.

In a documentary called “Francesco” which was released on Wednesday, he said, “Homosexual people have the right to be in a family. They are children of God. Nobody should be thrown out or be made miserable over it.”

He also suggested the creation of a civil union law for the parties involved to be legally covered.

Through his course as the Pope, this was not unexpected from him at all, given that he has been vocal about his love and support for the said community.

However, conservatives rained on the parade of the LGBTQ members by opposing the statements of the pope. Bishop Thomas Tobin of Providence, Rhode Island said, “The pope’s statement clearly contradicts what has been the long-standing teaching of the church about same-sex unions,”

Straightforwardly, he added, “The church cannot support the acceptance of objectively immoral relationships.”

The technicalities of what the Catholic church teaches and what it does not are still up for discussion, but the Catholic teaches to treat all people, including homosexuals, with dignity.
