Making history in another country, Filipino-American Rechie Valdez created another milestone not only for herself but also for Filipinos after being named the new Minister of Small Business.

On July 27, Valdez penned a post on her Facebook account expressing her gratitude after being appointed as the new member of the Canadian cabinet.

“I am truly honored and privileged to serve as Canada’s Minister of Small Business. I look forward to working with and supporting small businesses across our country,” she said.

Being declared the leader for small businesses in Canada, Valdez wanted to highlight its essence to the community and emphasize the presence of Filipinos in the country.

“It was a profound moment for me to know that I was representing the close to one million Filipinos now here in Canada,” Valdez said in an interview with an international broadcasting company.

In this one-of-a-kind moment of serving the people internationally, she expressed her deepest gratitude to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and her supporters for making this possible.

“I also want to give a special thank you to the constituents of Mississauga—Streetsville for your support. To my Cabinet colleagues, I am excited to get to work!” Valdez said.

Back in October 2021, Valdez was also the first Filipina to serve as a member of the parliament, specifically in Mississauga—Streetsville, Ontario.

During her term as a member of parliament, she advocates programs concerning climate change, investing in women entrepreneurs, healthcare investments, and supporting small business owners.
