The Department of Social Welfare and Development in Bicol (DSWD-5), through the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS), on Monday started distributing nearly PHP2 million in cash assistance to fire-affected families in Pilar, Sorsogon.

In a statement, DSWD-5 Regional Director Norman Laurio said they started handing out PHP10,000 to each of the 190 initially identified families affected by a fire in Purok 1, Barangay Banuyo on March 13.

“We are committed to bringing support to affected communities. The AICS program ensures that those who need assistance the most can receive it, providing relief in the wake of calamities,” Laurio said.

The agency also provided 353 displaced families with family food packs and essential non-food items.

On March 14, the Angels in Red Vests also conducted psychosocial activities, including play therapy for displaced children and interactive discussions for affected families.

Laurio said that under the directives of Secretary Rex Gatchalian, DSWD-5 remains committed to ensuring that the crisis individuals receive immediate and compassionate services. (PNA)
